new government report says 7 out of 10 people do not exercise
on a regular basis. It also reports that 4 out of 10 people have
no physical activity at all...
All the reports explaining the benefits of leading an active
life have not resulted in people being more active. This level
of inactivity has remained the same since the first research done
in 1997.
"You don't have to work up a big sweat at the gym or become
a long-distance runner," said U.S. Health and Human Services
Secretary Tommy Thompson, who released the report on World Health
Day. He adds, "Good health is literally a walk away."
Only 3 of 10 people exercised regularly. Which is defined as
light to moderate exercise five times a week for half an hour,
or vigorous exercise three times a week for twenty minutes at
a time.
The data was obtained by interviewing 68,000 American adults.
It is estimated by the experts that 300,000 deaths per year are
a result of a sedentary life style. The main associated diseases
are heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other conditions.
