According to a research published in May, it's not only the flesh but also the peel of grapefruit that might have health benefits, this time in terms of lowering cholesterol.

A study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has shown that plant compounds found in the peels of tangerines and oranges, lower LDL or 'bad' cholesterol in hamsters fed a high-cholesterol diet. Meanwhile, another compound called naringenin found in grapefruit peel also had a cholesterol lowering effect, although it was weaker.

All these plant compounds act as antioxidants and belong to a group of plant chemicals called flavonoids, typically found in tea and red wine.

The researchers suggest citrus peel may work by reducing the secretion of cholesterol from the liver. But before you go crazy with your zester, bear in mind you'd need to eat the zest of about 25 oranges or 75 grapefruits a day to see a benefit!

Making sure your heart is healthy may add years to your life. The emphasis of the healthy heart diet is to give up certain types of foods that may cause heart complications. People who are interested should be willing to give up greasy and fattening foods. To some this may mean that you must be willing to give up the foods that taste really good.

In order to have a healthy heart, you need to minimize the amount of cholesterol in your body. Cholesterol comes from the foods you eat and from your body itself. However, your body alone creates the appropriate amount of cholesterol for you, so it doesn't need any additional cholesterol from your food intake. In order to minimize the amount of cholesterol in your diet, you should limit the amount of red meat that you eat. Instead of red meat, you can eat fish and poultry. Use egg whites or substitutes instead of the whole egg. As a rule of thumb, if it’s greasy, you probably shouldn't eat it.

Being successful at this diet can prevent a heart attack and a stroke. All in all, it should lead to a more healthy existence and give you more energy.

All citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C as well as other micro-nutrients, certain phyto-chemicals and fiber. Citrus fruits also protect against infection and cancer. They are an essential element in any healthy diet.

Grapefruit is high in vitamin C, potassium, several carotenoids including beta-carotene. The white pith contains pectin and bioflavonoids which makes grapefruits an excellent antioxidant food.
