What is a vegetarian diet?

To some being a vegetarian is a way of eating and to some it is a lifestyle. So just what does it mean to be a vegetarian? There are several types of vegetarian eating plans

Lacto-ovo Vegetarian: Does not eat meat, poultry, or fish, but includes dairy products and eggs in the diet along with plant-based foods.

Lacto Vegetarian: Excludes all animal products except dairy products. Includes all plant-based foods in their diet plan.

Ovo Vegetarian: Excludes all animal products except eggs. Includes all plant-based foods in their diet.

Vegan or Strict Vegetarian: Exclude all animal products including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, margarine, and honey. This meal plan only includes plant-based foods in the diet.

The American Dietetic Association notes that “vegetarian diets are healthful and nutritionally adequate when appropriately planned.”

Pregnant or lactating women have increased nutrient needs that can be met by eating a well-planned vegetarian diet that includes a variety of foods. In some cases a supplement that contains calcium, Vitamin D, iron, folic acid and Vitamin B12 is required to meet the expecting mom’s needs.

General benefits of a vegetarian diet:

Studies show a positive link between a vegetarian diet and health. These include; decreased obesity, constipation, some types of cancer, alcoholism, hypertension, heart disease, type II diabetes, and high blood pressure.

The FDA recognizes that high intakes of fruits and vegetables rich in beta-carotene or Vit C have been linked with reduced cancer risks. Dietary fiber could also possibly reduce the risk of some cancers. At least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables or 6 servings of whole grains daily are recommended.

Certain foods have been beneficial in their ability to lower blood pressure. Grains such as oats and barley and many varieties of beans contain soluble fiber that helps bring high blood pressure down to desirable levels.

Reducing fat in the diet may reduce cancer risk, will help with weight control and may reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Vegetarians should limit foods that are fried, or prepared with added sauces, gravy, or butter.
